Cincinnati's Public Library
was authorized in 1853 and celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2003.
From 1856-1870, a number of its
collections were housed within the Apprentices' Library of the
Ohio
Mechanics Institute.
The 19th century railroad powered
American industrialism, while its engines and machine tools
drew national crowds to the OMI's Grand Expositions,
1870-1888.
Walter H. Maxwell, a Director
of the OMI, witnessed and photographed Orville Wright's first
hydroplane flight (and sinking), a few years after Kitty Hawk.
